$5 Fire: Wah Fung Fast Food

Pork Over Rice, $5

Wah Fung Fast Food sits at an incredibly sweet spot right at the intersection of bang for your buck and unbelievable culinary experience. This Chinatown hole-in-the-wall can get lost in the energy of the neighborhood's markets and aromas, but needs to get on your bucket list now - like right now. Don’t be deterred by the length of the line and hop in, she moves fast.

While there are a few options here, you have to keep your eye on the prize - the $5 Pork over Rice with Cabbage (there is a chicken option for those with pig-related restrictions). You’ll shuffle past hanging ducks into a steam-filled room that has a life-reaffirming smell of roast meats, and watch as they freshly chop the meat with a shockingly large cleaver. Get some napkins and a fork for the road, and take yourself across the street to plop on a bench at Grand Street Park.

After unboxing the plastic container, you’re met with neon red cha siu pork sitting pretty above a bed of steamed cabbage on top of rice - the grease and flavor from the pork seeping down into the rice forming a risotto vibe. The pork itself is juicy, practically falling apart just by looking at it. Yet, it somehow adds texture through its healthy amount of char which complements the softness of the cabbage and rice with perfection.
