Chinatown is a literal goldmine of authenticity in a city that often values Beef and Broccoli over Xiao Long Bao - no hate on take out, still love you. Business after business is peddling incredible food with recipes often straight from the cow as grandmothers cook in the back with precision and dedication that could be found at few ‘trendy’ locales across the five boroughs. As a result, the neighborhood can become daunting to first-timers or even veterans as they decide what region and type of food they choose to cash out on. If a utopian vision of your Chinatown dinner includes dumplings, then steer yourself directly onto Bayard Street towards Deluxe Green Bo. This completely unassuming storefront may blend into the melange of Chinatown storefronts, but this is not a run of the mill place. Deluxe Green Bo has some of the best dumplings in New York - really only rivaled by spots in Chinatowns in Flushing or Sunset Park. The noodle used in all of their items is fully al-dente and incredibly fresh, and goes perfectly hand-in-hand with their fillings of pork, chive, and some other magic. The place is cheap as hell so you’ll totally be able to over-order and try everything, as one should.
The Essentials:
Cold Sesame Noodles
A pile of fresh noodles in an out-of-control peanut sauce. I’ll always tell myself I’m just going to eat half and take them home, but they never make it to the takeout box.
Hot and Spicy Wontons
Thin noodle paired with substantial pork filling doused in chili oil.
Soup Dumplings
These pass the test of durable enough to make it from the platter to the spoon, and delicate enough to bite/slurp - no easy feat. Not to mention they blow Joe’s Shanghai out of the water in terms of soup flavor and filling.
Potstickers
Long, rectangular friend potstickers that complete the perfect Green Bo meal with a soft top and nearly-crunchy base.
