Everyone with a single brain cell knows that New York has the best pizza in the entire world. Yes I understand the art of Da Michele in Naples or even Lou Malnati’s in Chicago, but there is nothing even a mile away from comparing to the feeling of leaving the bars or clubs with friends destined to a slice shop of your choosing - I mean that’s at least half the reason for going out, right?
Your head’s spinning and your ears are nearing full tinnitus, but suddenly the seas part, and the damage you did to yourself that night flies out the window. The fumes of pizza fill your entire existence and the red neon light drags you in - no questions asked. Plain, pepperoni, oregano, red pepper flakes, I don’t judge. However you do it, you do it. The fusion of dripping cheese and molten sauce on a bed of crust that goes in soft as a cloud but somehow inexplicably leaves crunching like a baguette. Yeah, it’s magical.
Yes there is better pizza in New York, which often involves taking an hour-long train and waiting for entire pies that demand cash payment, but as far as I’m concerned the late night New York slice is as close to heaven as many New Yorkers will get. And as such, you better be picking wisely.

Scarr’s Pizza
This Lower East spot is a classic. On top of being picture perfect for any going out downtown, there’s something different about gorging these slices. While it may appear like a classic New York slice shop on it Orchard Street exterior, what’s going on inside is anything but run of the mill. In fact, the word on the street’s that they mill their own flour daily. This yields crust that’s slightly puffier and heavily bubbled in addition to cheese and sauce that’s far more flavorful than a typical dollar slice. Definitely check out their Jalapeño, Pepperoni, and Honey slice or stick to the classics.

Prince Street Pizza
If you’re looking for something with more substance flock to Prince Street. Sure you can get a regular slice here but there’s really not a point in going if you don’t get the Soho Square - a Sicilian square slice with a spicier sauce and the type of pepperoni that curls up into cups as it browns, all atop focaccia like crust. It’s heavy, greasy, incredibly flavorful, and is perfect for hangover prevention.

Joes Pizza (Carmine Street)
The icon that hasn’t aged, Joe’s Pizza has matured like a fine wine. Stop in for cheap, classic New York slices at any of their 3 locations in the city - however I’m definitely partial to the original Carmine location because you can eat it in the park across the street. Look out for the fresh mozzarella slice, but even the plain cheese properly decorated will serve as a perfect nightcap. Versus other corner slice shops, Joe’s is constantly doling out new pies because of their sometimes overbearing popularity, practically ensuring yours will be fresh.
