Quick Bites: Regina’s Grocery

While throngs of the Lower East Side have bowed in the face of relentless gentrification, Regina’s has remained and maintains its stance as a cultural beacon for the neighborhood. A phenomenal, never-failing Italian deli with slightly elevated renditions of sandwiches that you would find at spots across the city - Regina herself took our order and immediately makes everyone feel at home. The warmth of this Orchard Street icon and the incredible vibes of the place make it a spot that you want to come to over and over again. Of note were the Meatball Parm, made with the crusty, stretchy Italian bread and the perfect ratio of sauce to tomato chunk accompanied by a satisfying cheese pull, and the Uncle Jimmy, which takes the classic Italian cold cut sandwich and elevates it with a kick of spice and a thick balsamic glaze on yeasty, sog-proof bread. It's a distinctly New York thing to have a restaurant at the heart of a community, and Regina's is a textbook example if you want to taste the LES properly.
